How long does a resin driveway last?
Laid at the correct depth over a properly built, well-drained base, a resin bound driveway is a long-term surface. The resins used are UV stable, so the colour holds rather than yellowing, and there are no joints to work loose. What shortens its life is almost always the base underneath rather than the resin itself, which is why we spend the time on what is below before we mix anything.
Is resin bound the same thing as resin bonded?
No, and the difference matters. Resin bound is what we install: the aggregate is mixed all the way through the resin and trowelled out, giving a smooth, permeable surface. Resin bonded is loose stone scattered onto a layer of resin, which looks rougher, sheds stone over time and is not permeable. If a quote you have been given is noticeably cheap, it is worth checking which of the two it is actually for.
Will weeds grow through a resin driveway?
There are no joints for weeds to root in, which is the main reason people move from block paving to resin. Windblown seed can occasionally take hold in surface debris, but it sits on top rather than growing through and lifts off easily. A sweep and an occasional wash down is genuinely the whole maintenance routine.
Can you lay resin over my existing driveway?
Sometimes. A sound, well-drained concrete or tarmac base can be overlaid, and that saves excavation. But it has to be inspected first. If the existing surface is cracked, moving, or holding water, the new resin will simply follow it and fail in the same places. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
Is a resin driveway slippery in winter?
The finished surface has an open, textured profile from the aggregate rather than being smooth like a screed, so it gives reasonable grip underfoot. The bigger winter benefit is the permeability: because water drains through rather than sitting on the surface, you get far less of the sheet ice that forms on non-permeable driveways after a hard frost.
